A good start proved to be half the battle when Galmoy scored a good win over Danesfort in the Northern junior ‘B’ hurling championship in Freshford on Friday.

Galmoy were quick out of the blocks. Early points were picked off by Padhric Gray (free), James Dunne and Thomas Corcoran. Danesfort’s opening salvo came from a free by Cathal O Neill in the 8th minute. Gray and O’Neill traded further frees before Galmoy shot the first goal.

Great goal

A good clearance from defence by Brian Doherty was met first time by Padhric Gray, who volleyed to the Danesfort net.

Within five minutes Gray netted again. This time the hard work was done by his brother Donncha, who soloed in from the left and saw his shot parried by Patrick Tynan only for Padhric Gray to finish.

These scores gave Galmoy great heart. They hurled with abandon for the remainder of the half, knocking over some impressive points. Danesfort were on the back foot and they missed frees.

Killian Treacy did his best to win possession. He pointed in the 18th minute following a good pass from Colm Phelan. He registered another when midfielder Darragh Sheehan fielded a great ball and laid off to Treacy. Jack Bruton hit a minor to leave Galmoy 2-8 to 0-5 ahead at the interval after playing with the breeze.

Cathal O’Neill and Darragh Sheehan were impressive for Danesfort in that half.

Revival

The losers launched a revival after the break. Jack Bruton led the way, shooting four points. Galmoy brought James Dunne to centre forward and he changed things. He pointed and then Padhric Gray converted a free.

Danesfort were in the game until Thomas Corcoran finished a Frank Phelan delivery to the net in the 44th minute. Paul Delaney and Brian Doherty did well in the Galmoy defence. Galmoy meet Blacks and Whites in the quarter-final.
