SIX teams from the area participated in the annual First Year Leinster camogie blitz played in Clara recently.

Teams from Grennan College, Thomastown, Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny, Castlecomer Community School, Borris Vocational School, Presentation Kilkenny and St Brendan’s, Birr took part in what was a really competitive event. The standard of camogie played was extremely high throughout, and some very competitive games resulted.

After a number of round robin games the top four teams qualified for the semi-finals. In the first semi-final Grennan College played Presentation Kilkenny. After a tough encounter, the Pres girls emerged victorious.

The second of the semi-finals featured Loreto A against Castlecomer. The Loreto, the dominant force in camogie for the past few years, came out on top.

The final had the makings of a thrilling encounter, and it lived up to its expectations. The Presentation and the Loreto matched each other score for score all the way through to the final whistle, which meant the game went to extra-time.

The Presentation came out with all guns blazing in the first half of additional time, and they led by three points at the break. Despite the best efforts of the Loreto girls, the Presentation held this lead to the finish.

There was some consolation for the Loreto when their B team beat St Brendan’s, Birr to bring home the Shield.
