The losers were hoping to secure their future in the grade by claiming a third victory, but the Southerners showed them no mercy as they maintained their 100% record with a show of real authority.

The winners dished out tough medicine at the start of each half. In the first they scored 2-4 before Lisdowney registered. Then at the start of the second they lashed home 1-4 without reply.

If Lisdowney needed a remindered that the intermediate grade was a tough battle ground, they got it against a team that was physical and strong in every tackle.

Willie O’Dwyer and John Walsh grabbed the early goals as the ’Vat set down a marker from the off. The losers opened their account through Michael Kenny in the 14th minute, but they couldn’t halt the strong drive of the winners at St John’s Park.

At the break Mullinavat were 3-7 to 0-7 clear. They opened the new half with all guns blazing again. Mark Mansfield converted a long range free. Willie O’Dwyer pointed. Ian Duggan and Mansfield repeated the dose before John Walsh skipped through for a goal.

Facing a deficit of 0-7 to 4-11 in the 41st minute, Lisdowney knew the game was up, but battled on. They pulled back a goal from a 20 metre free by Rory Hickey within 60 seconds, but the game was gone.

The winners had a host of stars, including midfielders Dinny Butler and Mark Mansfield, Ian Duggan, John Walsh, Paurice Gahan and Willie O’Dwyer. Good for the losers were Niall Mackey and Peter Bergin.
