St Lachtain’s1- 17
THEY were brave and honest in their efforts at Canon Kearns Park, Castlecomer but Young Irelands (Gowran) had to give best to St Lachtain’s (Freshford) in this exciting third round intermediate hurling league clash.
John Fitzpatrick got the first score for Lachtain’s before Paul Kehoe replied from a free a minute later. Michael Farrell got his first for Freshford before Barry Hughes pointed after a pacy run down the left wing to put Freshford two ahead.
Ollie Carter grabbed the first goal after a pass from Dick Carroll put him in behind the Freshford full-back line and he finished beyond the faultless James Meagher. Freshford responded quickly. A high catch by midfielder Noel McGree saw him hand possession to Beckett, who finished past ’keeper Martin Carey.
Eoin Guinan pointed from a sideline cut before John Morris pointed from a great strike from the middle of the field. Beckett was causing trouble. He caught the next Meagher puck-out and pointed on the run.
Dick Carroll made sure that Freshford wouldn’t go in at half time ahead. He pointed twice before the whistle blew. This meant that the teams went in at the break all level at 1-6 apiece.
Freshford had the breeze in their backs but they had wasted a lot of possession when trying to score. Veteran Dick Carroll had been excellent for Gowran, scoring two points and he created 1-3. However, apart from Ollie Carter, the support he received was poor.
Against that the Freshford attack was linking up nicely for their scores. Beckett straight away was in the middle of the action again. He forced a fine save from Martin Carey within 30 seconds of the restart. Then Guinan tapped over his third point.
Started to get on top
Freshford started to take control. Davy Brennan and Michael Farrell pointed before Brian Kennedy and Bill Beckett scored two equally impressive points from the midfield. Young Irelands pointed through a Paul Kehoe free before Guinan took a quick pass from Farrell before shooting his fourth score.
Beckett snatched his third from play before a foul on the main man, Dick Carroll offered an easy point to Kehoe. The latter pointed again a minute later from another free before Brian Kennedy scored another spectacular long range point from his own 65 yard line.
Dick Carroll got his third point from play when he made a sharp run down the sideline before shooting before a Guinan free pushed Lachtain’s five points into the lead. Marin Carey made another fine save, this time from Davy Brennan before Guinan pointed the resulting 65.
Guinan pointed his seventh and final score of the game to leave his side comfortable winners. Fine performances from Bill Beckett and Eoin Guinan meant that Freshford got the scores they needed while Niall Phelan was a towering figure in the defence.
Dick Carroll and Stephen Byrne were the main men Gowran. Most of their scores came from the in-form Paul Kehoe’s.
