Erin’s Own 0-17
A TERRIFIC display of sharp-shooting from Keith Hogan helped Clara claim the silverware in the Byrne Cup final.
The corner-forward was on song in Jenkinstown, notching up 1-13 of his side’s 1-18, as Clara got the better of Erin’s Own (Castlecomer) on Thursday evening.
Played in good conditions the game never reached anything like championship fervour but did however provide reasonable entertainment for the good sized attendance. Clara always looked that little bit sharper and led 0-7 to 0-4 at the end of the opening quarter. However the ’Comer side would have been pleased enough with the scoreline at that point as they had battled a stiff breeze in the early stages.
That all changed when, in the 18th minute, Erin’s Own conceded a 20 metre free when they trailed by just a point. The aforementioned Hogan made no mistake, drilling the sliotar to the net to shoot Clara four points clear, a lead they extended to five by half-time (1-10 to 0-8).
It didn’t take Erin’s Own long to muster a comeback in the second half, as two frees from ’Comer’s top marksman Martin Boran in the early stages reduced the arrears to a goal. They shaved another score off the margin by the three quarters stage; now there were just two points between the sides. It was still anybody’s game.
By the 55th minute just a point separated the sides (Clara 1-15, Erin’s Own 0-17) but Hogan wasn’t finished yet. The corner-forward hit two frees and a 65 to ensure a Clara victory.
Note: On an evening when both teams put in a good effort and the Conahy Shamrocks club had everything in top class condition, there was some disappointment that the trophy wasn’t available to be presented at the end of the game.
