DANESFORT beat Mooncoin by the narrowest of margins in Group A of the intermediate hurling league in Mullinavat. Despite missing key players, Richie Hogan, who picked up an injury playing with the county, the Danesfort attack was sharp, writes Vincent Ryan.
The winneres had the best of the opening chances. Five minutes in they were unlucky not to score a goal when Padraig Forrestal got a shot away while on his knees. The effort was saved. Robbie Walsh opened up the scoring shortly afterwards.
The Danesfort half-forward pointed from the left side of the pitch shooting into the town end goal. A free two minutes later from Robbie Walsh, who was on free taking duties in place of Richie Hogan, put Danesfort two points clear.
It wasn’t until the 10th minute that Mooncoin responded. Michael Grace pointed from the right hand sideline. Aidan Walsh added another to level. After a sustained period of Mooncoin pressure a 65 from P.J. Rowe put them in front as the midpoint of the half approached.
Robbie Walsh brought Danesfort back level. Despite deermined defending from Phillip Walsh, a point from Ray Wall put Mooncoin back in the lead. Aidan Walsh stretched the advantage to two before Darren Booth responded for the winners.
Eight minutes from the break Eoin Hennebry put Mooncoin two points clear. A free for Danesfort in their own half didn’t appear to pose any threat when Tony Woodcock sent the ball dropping into the other area. Stephen Duncan got his hurley to the ball and managed to deflect it past Niall O’Hanlon in the Mooncoin goal. Danesfort were a point ahead.
The Suirsiders hit back for points form Ray Wall to bring them level. Danesfort were unlucky when Robbie Welsh hit the post from a free. A minor from Stephen Crowley saw Mooncoin head into the dressing rooms at half-time leading by 0-8 to 1-4.
The second half opened with high tempo action. Robbie Walsh opened the scoring, pulling Danesfort level after 32 minutes. Keith Kirwan put Mooncoin back in the lead before a huge point from David Forristal made it a draw game.
Mooncoin tried to pull away. Points from Thomas Hennebry and Keith Kirwan saw them move two clear. Paddy Hogan scored a point for Danesfort to keep them going but Mooncoin responded with a Michael Grace point.
The deciding passage of the game which saw Danesfort pull ahead opened with a point off the back of a hop ball. Paul Murphy won the ball and put it over the bar. Darren Booth added another from the right wing to leave it all square.
Danesfort took the lead via a Paul Murphy free from half-way. Mid-way through the half a great solo effort from Paul Murphy saw him run into space and casually shorten his grip on the stick before putting Danesfort two points clear.
Keith Kirwan responded for Mooncoin with a minor in the 47th minute. But Cillian Treacy posted a reply. A P.J. Rowe free kept the pressure on Danesfort.
Danesfort had a chance to put the game out of Mooncoin’s reach when Ben O’Connor was through one-on-one with the Mooncoin ’keeper but he was unable to finish. Paul Murphy kept Danesfort in the lead with a huge point from the right wing.
Thomas Hennebry kept Mooncoin hopes alive when he threw over a free in the 57th minute to leave the minimum between them. Determined Danesfort held on.
