THIS was yet another of those excellent games in the Junior Hurling League and it was played in Piltown on Friday.
Lisdowney, trained by Charlie Carter, travelled to the Southern Principality with high hopes of a victory, and they were well entitled to harbour such hope.
Their previous games gave the side room for optimism, but they didn’t reckon on the determined mindset of the locals. Piltown opened brightly with a philly Kenny point after two minutes. Rory Hickey nullified that with a good free for the visitors. Both sides traded punches-metaphorically speaking- but it was the Piltown lads who stretched awa, leading by six points to three after 19 minutes.
At the 25th minute mark, Piltown hammered home a great goal. Nicky Kenny was the orchestrator, when placing Richie McCarthy, who left the Lisdowney goalkeeper, Grogan helpless. However, the visitors came storming back inside the last three minutes of the half, scoring four points, with the Hickey brothers, and Eamonn Delahunty conspicuouis.
At half-time Piltown led by 1-9 to 0-7.
Lisdowney opened the brighter, and an early Rory Hickey point settled them to their task. Hickey with two more points and Delahunty with a single had their side within a single puck of the home side. The tempo was dramatically pushed into overdrive, as both sides stripped their teeth in search of dominance.
Kevin Brophy had a great chance of a Piltown goal, but his blistering shot went wide. Rory Hickey blasted a penalty towards the Piltown goal, but it was saved, and cleared. By the 56th minute just four points divided the protagonists. It was still in the balance right up to the wire.
On balance the better team won, but they will not be satisfied with their performance if further gains are to be gleaned.
Best for Piltown were Philly and Nicky Kenny, Andrew Mc Carthy, Shane Kinsella, Richie McCarthy, and Martin Power.
For Lisdowney, Rory and Eddie Hickey, Eddie Delahunty, and Vinny Fitzpatrick played well.
