A GOAL and point within seconds at the end of the third quarter put Wexford in the driving seat and they powered on from there to score a good win over Kilkenny in the Walsh Cup senior hurling semi-final in windswept Blackwater yesterday, winning by 2-18 to 0-16.

The goal from Padge Doran in the 50th minute put wind assisted Wexford 2-10 to 0-13 in front. A quick point from P.J. Nolan boosted their confidence no end and after that a young and largely inexperienced Kilkenny Development Squad was going backwards. The losers scored just one point, the last one of the match, duirng the closing 10 minutes when they were completely over-run.

The visitors looked good during the opening half. At one stage they were five points clear (0-9 to 0-4), but Wexford somehow kept in touch. The home team got a lucky break when they grabbed a goal from a Gary Moore penalty right on the break.

When they might have been better off, Kilkenny were back level at half-time, the scoring standing at 0-10 to 1-7.

Slowly but surely the winners got on top after the rest. When Doran shot the goal and Nolan added the quick point the game swung immediately in their direction.
