THE Rower-Inistioge made first class use of the wind in the second half as they turned a one-time deficit of seven points into an eight-point win over St Lachtain’s (Freshford) in the intermediate hurling league at Gowran on Sunday.

The wind shaped this game, and the team playing with the elements dominated.

The action during opening five minutes was fast and furious, but once Stephen Farrell slotted home a goal from close range for St Lachtain’s in the 10th minute they began to enjoy the better of things.

With the aid of a goal from corner-forward, Shane Donnelly in the 19th minute, St Lachtain’s opened out their best advantage of the match, which was 2-4 to 0-3.

Five minutes before the rest, the Rower pulled back a goal through Conor Joyce, but still at the rest, they trailed by 1-5 to 2-6.

The winners tore back into the game after the turn.

An early point was picked off by Paul Sheehan (free), but St Lachtain’s hit back through Stephen Farrell and Shane Donnelly to keep a decent 2-8 to 1-6 in front.

The Rower then produced a blast of ferocious hurling that netted them six points in-a-row.

Kieran Joyce (2), Tom Murphy, Paul Sheehan (2) and Joyce again all hit the target as they took over, and opened out a lead of 1-12 to 2-8.

St Lachtain’s halted the galloped when Stephen Farrell pointed a free.

However, the Rower bounced back again, and this time, they put six scores together.

At the end of this golden run they were sailing with 1-19 on the ’board. St Lachtain’s finished on a high, but late points from Stephen Farrell still left them a good way behind.

The winners half-back line grew into the game nicely, all three, with Kieran Joyce (the best), Sean Cummins and Sean Lyster played well.

Others who caught the eye were David Lyng, Tom Murphy, Michael Grace and Paul Sheehan.
