The camogie year came to a climax in Ballyhale on Saturday when Thomastown cantered to victory over disappointing Rower-Inistioge to retain the under-21 Roinn A championship.

In the process the victors claimed consecutive minor and under-21 championships for the first time in the club’s history. With the exception of All-Star captain Shelly Farrell, it was an all minor team with seven of the minors also starting in the county final defeat to Mullinavat. The Kilkenny senior All-Star led the way, scoring 1-6 – 1-5 from play.

Defensively, they were solid. Alice Carey and Niamh Quigley were dominant on the full-back line, while county minors Ailish Butler and the impressive Ciara Farrell controlled proceedings on the half-back line.

All-Ireland minor winning captain, Meighan Farrell performed well in midfield, while industrious 16-year-old Sarah Walsh and county minor Niamh Donnelly were also amongst Thomastown’s lead performers in attack. The Rower disappointed. They didn’t do themselves justice.

Inter-county goalie Niamh Donnelly opened the scoring with a point from play. After the losers missed a goal chance, Thomastown took complete control. Meighan Farrell added a point before her sister Shelly took over.

The All-Star added three consecutive points before scoring a goal in the 17th minute. Four additional points from Niamh Donnelly (2) and the Farrell sisters upped the lead by half-time to 1-9 to 0-0. The second-half was a stroll.

Player of the match: Shelly Farrell(Thomastown).

In her last game as an under-age player, Shelly led the way as a captain with a glorious performance. The All-Star scored 1-5 from play as she oozed class. Shelly edged out her cousin, Ciara, who was superb, and Niamh Donnelly, who scored 0-5 from play.
