EMERALDS (Urlingford) bounced back after a disappointing defeat in the opening round to beat Mooncoin in this interesting intermediate hurling league game at Bennettsbridge on Friday.
From the throw-in the exchanges were intense. Mooncoin enjoyed the better of things during the early play.
Taking advantage of the strong wind blowing towards the country end goal, Mooncoin took an early lead. Keith Kirwan opened the scoring with a point and Danny Purcell added another in the third minute before the Emeralds had a chance to reply.
Diarmuid Mackey was unlucky to miss a free that would have put Mooncoin three points ahead.
Ten minutes passed before Padraig Phelan opened the scoring for the Emeralds. Mooncoin were quick to respond. P.J. Rowe sent a dangerous ball into the Emeralds goal and it was knocked out for a 65. P.J. Rowe stepped up and secured a point from the 65.
After 15 minute Mooncoin held a two point lead after dominating the opening exchanges.
The Emeralds dug deep. They hit back to score three points without reply. Padraig Phelan scored a free to get the Emeralds back into contention. A great solo effort saw Derek Lyng run down the left wing before sending the ball over the bar at the village end, which earned Emeralds parity.
Ian Grant, playing at full-forward, broke through the Mooncoin defence and was one-on-one with Mooncoin goalkeeper, Niall O’Hanlon, but his shot sailed above the crossbar. This score put Emeralds in front after 17 minutes.
P.J. Rowe even things up for Mooncoin with a point from midfield. During the closing 10 minutes the teams exchanged points. Jamie Ryan scored for Emeralds and Keith Kirwan sent a massive shot over the bar for Mooncoin.
The score was 0-5 each at half-time. There was still everything to play for, but the advantage looked to be with Emeralds who had the advantage of the wind to come.
Mooncoin started strongly facing the elements. Diarmuid Mackey picked off two points for Mooncoin without a reply during the five minutes after the turn. The game settled into a right battle for midfield supremacy.
As the battle continued tempers flared and a bust up resulted in two yellow cards being shown to players.
Continued pressure resulted in a goal for the Emeralds. After 50 minutes the Mooncoin goalkeeper Niall O’Hanlon brought off a great save but he failed to clear the ball. Despite desperate efforts by the defence Eddie Ryan managed to slip the ball past the ’keeper and into the net.
Emeralds were now leading by a point. Ray Morriarty doubled the lead with a point before thee was another dust-up and the referee was forced to wave for two more yellow cards. In the dying minutes Padraig Phelan landed two more points for Emeralds to earn them what must be a very satisfying win.
