THE time has come for the Lisdowney Coca-Cola hurling Sevens tournament to swing into action again. Thirty-two teams from Tipperary, Laois, Galway and Kilkenny will compete for the Sweeney Cup and the Kilkenny Supporters Club Shield.
Most of the players on the successful Kilkenny teams of the recent past have played at one time or another in this tournament and some of them, including Henry Shefflin, James ‘Cha’ Fitzpatrick, Richie Hogan, Damien Cleere, Denis Byrne, David Buggy and Conor Fogarty, among others, have laid claim to the prestigious Coca-Cola sponsored Best Player Award.
This is the 30th year of a tournament which must rank as one of the most popular and long running events for the under-13 age group anywhere in the country. Panels are made up by 10 players. Games are of two halves of 15 minutes each and no solo runs are allowed.
On Saturday each of the 16 teams will play two matches. Eight will qualify for the finals day (Saturday, August 6), four for the Sweeney Cup and four for the Kilkenny Supporters Club Shield.
The remaining 16 teams will be in action again on Saturday, July 30.
