So it’s a replay - the first since 1959 as Kilkenny’s dramatic second half comeback was held by Galway thanks to Joe Canning’s injury time equalising free.

A sensational conclusion to the 2012 All-Ireland final saw Canning level the match with a disputed injury time free and now Kilkenny and Galway meet for the third time in the championship - to decide the holders of the Liam mcCarthy Cup - on September 30 - in Croke Park.

Kilkenny, down 1-9 to 0-7 at half time as Galway really took the game to the defending champions, were inspired by Henry Shefflin in the second half to go in front not once, but twice and on both occasions by the Ballyhale man who was chasing his record breaking ninth All-Ireland medal.

Yet Galway refused to yield and came back - first with a Niall Burke goal and then with Canning’s dramatic equaliser.

Galway began the game just as they had done in the Leinster final - laying down early markers all over the field and their first half performance culminated with a stunning solo and finish to the Kilkenny net by Joe Canning.

On the resumption a marked improvement from the Kilkeny defence, and the display of Shefflin saw Kilkenny fight back and wipe out Galway’s commanding lead as the game edged to its concluding stages.

A missed Colin Fennelly goal chance was soon followed by an Eoin Larkin run in the 67th minute. The team captain was taken down by James Skehill for a penalty - and Shefflin opted to take his point to give Kilkenny the lead nintey seconds from the end of normal time.

Then came Galway’s equaliser from Canning, two minutes in to injury time.

The minor decider between Tipperary and Dublin was also a draw - so the double header remains in Croke Park for the last Sunday in September.
