Kilkenny opened the new hurling season by unleashing what could be termed a number of kittens in the Walsh Cup senior tournament, and they must have delighted manager, Brian Cody as they bared their teeth.
New kids on the block like Jonjo Farrell, Mark Kelly and the fleet footed Liam Ryan were the stars of the show as DIT were given their marching orders in the pre-season event in Freshford this afternoon. The trio above helped themselves to no less than 4-10 as the Cats won comfortably by 5-23 to 1-9.
The victory set up a semi-final clash with Galway - a repeat of the All-Ireland final of 2012 - at the same venue next Sunday.
DIT tried their best, but they were always climbing a mountain after conceding a goal in the fourth minute to Joe Brennan, who finished a lovely involving Ryan and Colin Fennelly.
The students finishing was poor. They registered only one point through Niall McMorrow during the opening 24 minutes.
By the break the winners, who moved the ball fast and efficiently, had eased 2-7 to 0-4 ahead. The second Kilkenny goal was scored by Farrell, who finished as top scorer with 2-3.
DIT had the opening point of the second half through McMorrow, and while they pressed for a while, the threat petered out. Liam Ryan grew into the game as it progressed and he landed some lovely nice points from long range on the way to claiming six in all.
DIT had a late goal from sub Anthony Ryan, a member of the Graigue-Ballycallan club, but it was nothing more than a consolation score. Paul Murphy, Tommy Walsh, who played the first half, Colin Fennelly and T.J. Reid were the only ones on the team who could be classed as regulars.
