The Kilkenny seniors made it four wins from four games when defeating Limerick in the National Camogie League in Nowlan Park on Sunday to qualify for the semi-finals on April 20, writes T.J. Mills.

Limerick started well but it was Kilkenny who opened the scoring when Lydia Fitzpatrick pointed. Miriam Walsh doubled Kilkenny’s advantage before the fifth minute. Denise Gaule then tapped over a free after a foul on Shelly Farrell.

Limerick got off the mark when Meadhbh O’Neill converted a free after Muireann Creamer was fouled.

Hit back

The winners hit back for two points in as many minutes when Denise Gaule set up Miriam Walsh and then Shelly Farrell scored, 0-5 to 0-1.

Meadbh O’Neill stopped the rot for the Shannonsiders with a well taken point from play. Limerick were nearly in for a goal but a brilliant block by Jacqui Frisby on Mairead Fitzgerald averted the danger. Shelly Farrell pushed Kilkenny’s lead to four points again with a well taken small score.

Deciding score

The score that ended the game as a contest came in the 26th minute. Michelle Quilty gained possession on the 20 metre line. She cut thought the losers defense; passed to Leann Fennelly, who tapped home from the edge of the square (1-6 to 0-2).

Kilkenny started the second half as they finished the first. Denise Gaule shot a free in the 34th minute after a foul on Miriam Walsh. Their second goal came when the impressive Miriam Walsh found sub Aoife Neary, who finished with aplomb (2-7 to 0-2).

It was game over really, but Limerick were giving a glimmer of hope in the 39th minute when Sarah Collins latched onto a poor clearance to hand pass to the back of the home net. Denise Gaule was on target again from the place ball after a foul on Shelly Farrell. Limerick minor star and second half sub, Caoimhe Costello tap over two frees but they never looked like saving the day.
