THE highest of the high achievers in sport in Kilkenny will be honoured at a glittering gala funchion in the city at the weekend.

Stars from such diverse sectors as athletics, boxing, canoeing, football, hurling, soccer, swimming, motor cycle racing and the equestrian world will rub shoulders at the 26th annual Hotel Kilkenny and Kilkenny People sports star banquet.

The big gathering will be in Hotel Kilkenny on Friday night when the 12 monthly award winners from 2012 will be presented with their Kilkenny Crystal trophies.

The celebration of what has been another fantastic year for sport in the county will reached a climax when the top two awards, the Supreme and Endeavour Awards, are presented.

The Supreme Award winner could be a group, or any individual (s) from the teams honoured during the year, and is generally regarded as the highest achiever in sport in Kilkenny, or the supreme champion.

Last year jockey Jospeh O’Brien, Piltown, the youngest winning rider in the Breeders Cup in Kentucky, was honoured Olympian Darren O’Neill from Paulstown was feted a year earlier.

The Endeavour Award is the second highest honour presented by the Hotel Kilkenny and Kilkenny People sports star Selection Committee, made up by nine times All-Ireland medal winner, Noel Skehan (Bennettsbridge), Michael Griffin (Operations Manager Griffin Hotel group) and John Knox (Sports Editor, Kilkenny People).

This is the night of nights in sport in Kilkenny when some of the finest athletes in the country come together to honour their peers.
