Mullinavat put in a powerful finish, shooting 1-1 in additional time, to claim their first victory in a thrilling Kilkenny under-21 Roinn A hurling final at Nowlan Park today (1-16 to 0-14).
They beat O’Loughlin Gaels who were put in front by a point from Jack Nolan in the 51st minute (0-14 to 0-13). The ’Vat powered back for an eqauliser form top performer, Mark Mansfield before John Walsh shot a terrific lead point from 50 metres in the 55th minute.
The losers missed two chances to draw level, and then they were caught for a goal in the 62nd minute. Darren Watters swept the ball home from the right edge of the goal at the city end before Mansfield rounded off a massive season for the Southerners when he added a late point.
The winners led by 0-11 to 0-7 at the break, with match stars Mansfield, Ger Malone and John Walsh doing all the scoring.
