Village looked a fair side

For a long way this All County junior hurling league game in John Lockes Park on Saturday was one-way traffic.

For a long way this All County junior hurling league game in John Lockes Park on Saturday was one-way traffic.

John Lockes were short their under-age county panellists, while James Stephens were by far the classier outfit, with some lethal forwards in the personage of Eoin McCormack, Matthew McWey and Gary Whelan.

Dynamite

They certainly carried far too much dynamite in their accoutrements to take care of the Callan challenge.

That is not to say that the Callan lads lay down and died - far from it. They performed to the best of their collective abilities and even though they came up short, their efforts were commendable, manly and courageous.

With points from Harry Wallace, Niall Tyrrell and Eoin McCormack The Village set the early pace.

A brace of points from John Paul Corcoran and Ger Shelly ruffled a few Village feathers but a goal by Anthony Lalor in the 9th minute flattened the Callan challenge for a long time.

At half time the winners were in a comfortable lead of 1-8 to 0-5. It was going to be a hard afternoon in the office for the Callan lads, but they stayed at the task, despite losing the services of the stoic John O’Neill.

An unanswered five point sequence from McCormack (4, two frees) and a Niall Tyrrell single shoved the Village into the fading light by the 47th minute. Callan rallied with points from Shane Bergin and Jason Corcoran (free and 65) but it purely cosmetic.

Good performers

James Stephens had good performers in Eoin McCormack, Matt McWey, Garry Whelan and Anthony Lalor. Nobody tried harder for the hone side than Paddy Kennedy, young Ryan Bergin and John Paul Corcoran.
