A soft Moon’ landing in Ballinkillen

Mooncoin were satisfied thus far with their progress in the South junior ‘A’ hurling league. They have had a couple of fine wins, and were very impressive in their last outing against Barrow Rangers.

They made the trip to Carlow to face off against Ballinkillen, but were forced to return pointless after giving as much as they were allowed by focussed opposition.

Mooncoin set the early pace. After 12 minutes they were comfortably out front by three points. However, from that point onwards it was the home side who dominated. Kevin Crowley added a single point in the 18 minutes to the break for Mooncoin, but the Carlow lads added eight in the same time frame to see them lead by three, 0-10 to 0-7.

Ballinkillen were the better outfit in that half, but in truth it was the men from Suirside who looked the more likely in the second. Having said that the only goal chances fell to the home side, but Martin Dalton and Damien O’Neill were unfortunate that the sliotar didn’t bounce kindly for them.

At 50 minutes the sides were locked at 0-11 apiece, and the tie was still in the melting pot. However, the homesters lasted the course with a greater resolve.

Sparkling form

Damien O’Neill was in sparkling form for Ballinkillen, shooting four great points from play. Darren Dalton also made a huge contribution with three points while centre-forward. Vincent Meany led the line with great encouragement.

Ballinkillen were well served by a no-nonsense centre spine with goalkeeper Sean Minchin very capable. James Kinsella was solid at full back and Dion Wall was foot perfect at number six. Craig Wall and Andrew Gaule had a stirring battle at midfield with the Mooncoin pairing of Kevin Crowley and Ethan Ryan.

Crowley was probably the best player on view, scoring seven of his side’s 13 points, six of which came from frees. Ciarán Dunphy was also busy.
