A number of arrests were made early this morning (Wednesday) as Operation Storm got underway.
The garda operation both combats crime as well as raising the public's awareness and involves over 130 gardai including 33 new recruits.
Searches and checkpoints will take place in the city throughout the city and day and the National Dogs Unit, the mounted unit and air support will all be drafted in.
A number of outstanding bench, penal and commital warrants will also be executed.
In a bid to reduce the number of fatalities on the roads gardai will be giving out high visibility aids and arm bands.
A communications vehicle will also be located on Kieran Street throughout the day to offer people advice on what precautions they can take to protect both themselves and their property.
Outside of the city gardai will also target a number of rural locations and towns including Urlingford, Callan and Castlecomer.
