Rehab Enterprises, a division of the Rehab Group which provides full and part time jobs for people with disabilities, is closing its cardboard box manufacturing facility in the Hebron Industrial Estate in Kilkenny.
The Kilkenny facility currently employs 17 people, 14 of whom have disabilities.
Kathleen O’Meara, a spokesperson for Rehab Enterprises said, “We very much regret that Rehab Enterprises in Kilkenny will close in coming weeks. This is due to a fundamental change in the market which has undermined demand for our core product. In recent years, lower cost packaging has become widely available in the Irish market. We have done everything possible to identify alternative business opportunities and to adapt our business model in Hebron. Unfortunately, a solution could not be found. We have reached a stage where the business is no longer viable.”
“We are now entering a period of consultation with all Rehab Enterprises staff in Kilkenny. Every effort will be made to identify alternative roles for each of our employees in one of Rehab’s other sites. We are currently working with each person to support their specific needs and all necessary supports will be provided. In the event that appropriate redeployment cannot be identified for an individual, we will provide ongoing support to that person to help them to identify and successfully obtain alternative employment, training or other activity which meet their needs and wishes. Rehab’s full support is available to everyone affected by this”.
Rehab Enterprises operated training and employment services for people with disabilities in Kilkenny from the 1970s before moving to full employment under the Wage Subsidy Schemein 2006. The Kilkenny facility currently employs 17 people, 14 of whom have disabilities.
Production will cease over the coming weeks as final commitments to customers are fulfilled. Ms O’Meara says, “We deeply appreciate the positive working relationship that we have had with many valued partners over the years in the Kilkenny area and beyond. Rehab extends its sincere thanks to all of our valued customers who have worked with us over the years supporting us in providing meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the Kilkennycommunity”.
