Burglars make hay while the sun shines in Kilkenny City

Opportunistic burglars made the best of the summer heatwave in recent days, when doors and windows were left open in houses around Kilkenny City.

In one situation on Rioch Street, a lady had the terrifying scenario of finding a stranger in her hallway. On Tuesday evening, she was out in the back garden enjoying the sun, leaving her front door unlocked. She heard a noise and went to investigate, and a man was in the house.

She shouted at the intruder and her dog also took issue with him. The man fled the scene, without taking any property or causing any damage.

This is the sort of opportunistic crime Gardai have been repeatedly warning about in recent months. Burglars move quickly through estates trying doors and windows on the off-chance they'll find one unlocked.

In another incident, a burglary took place last Tuesday, July 19 — this time in Westfield Court, Loughboy. At some point between 9am and 5pm, entry was gained through a front window left open, and a sum of cash was taken.
