Family, friends and good health are what matters most according to entrepreneur and businessman, Bobby Kerr.
The Kilkenny man was speaking at the Annual Kilkenny Age Friendly Seniors Forum at the Ormonde Hotel last Thursday.
Mr Kerr is well known as the chairman of the Insomnia Coffee Company (he is planning on opening a shop in Kilkenny shortly) and was also a dragon in the popular TV show, Dragons' Den and is a radio presenter on NewsTalk.
“I am from the Castlecomer Road and it is still very close to my heart. It is important that you keep a sense of where you come from and who your people are. His family previously owned the Newpark Hotel and he ran the establishment for a number of years.
Last year Mr Kerr was diagnosed with cancer.
“12 months ago I was diagnosed with head and neck cancer. The day I got the diagnosis I was asked by Brian Cody (the Kilkenny hurling manager) to speak in Cilin Hill. It was the week before the All-Ireland final.
“I was shell-shocked. The worst part was not knowing,” he said referring to the waiting time from the time of diagnosis until a treatment plan is formed.
“Once I knew I could get better that is what I focussed on,” he said.
Mr Kerr spoke candidly and admitted that although he is a very successful businessman material wealth is not what matters.
He stressed the importance of friends, family and health, which, he said many people take for granted.
He also shared the story of his mother-in-law who had Alzheimers.
“My mother-in-law had it for ten years and my wife went there for hours every day. She was completely devoted to her mother who was able to stay in her home until very close to the end.
“The dedication of a family member can make all the difference,” he added.
He also offered some simple life tips including: forget the begrudgers, enjoy what you do, be thankful you have your health and family, there is real value out there so go out and get it, surround yourself with positive people, set realistic targets and goals for yourself. have integrity, innovate constantly and play it to win.
