Council's hedge-cutting bill threat an effective tactic

Kilkenny County Council has not had to go to court yet over landowners’ non-compliance with hedge-cutting notices as the threat of the local authority billing them for the works “concentrates the mind”.

At a recent meeting of Piltown Municipal District, Cllr Fidelis Doherty asked what action was taken as regards the enforcement of hedge-cutting.

Area engineer, Ian Gardner, said they give landowners a notice first to cut the hedges, then they follow-up if they’re still not cut.

The next step is to tell landowners that the Council will cut them and send the bill to the landowner and this “concentrates the mind”, he said.
