A LARGE crowd attended a gala dinner held in Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny on Thursday of last week on the occasion of the retirement of Dr. Henry Bourke as Consultant Obstretrican/Gynaecologist at St Lukes General Hospital, Kilkenny.

The nostalgic affair was attended by Dr. Bourke’s family, medical colleagues, administrative management staff, nursing and midwifery staff (including retired staff). One Medical colleague and his wife travelled from Canada to attend the night.

Dr Bourke worked in St Luke’s for the past 28 years. During his time he delivered many thousand babies, along with performing numerous gynaecological procedures.

The night was a fitting tribute to Dr. Bourke and showed the very high esteem he is held in by the staff he worked with. Memories of the 28 years were recalled by speakers, along with words of gratitude and appreciation.

As an educator, Dr. Bourke shared his expertise and knowledge with doctors, medical and midwifery students. As an Obstetrician/ Gynaecologist, Dr. Bourke always advocated for improvements in maternity and gynaecology services for the women of Carlow/Kilkenny.

He was highly professional and the health and safety of mothers and babies and the women under his care were always his priority. The evening concluded with a presentation of a portrait which was commissioned by one of his colleagues, artist, Mary Hickey.
