Special Olympics glory for local competitors

There was much to celebrate as Kilkenny’s three athletes completed their Special Olympics campaign in Athens, Greece over the weekend.

There was much to celebrate as Kilkenny’s three athletes completed their Special Olympics campaign in Athens, Greece over the weekend.

Aquatics athlete Ciara Trait captured a gold medal with a personal best time in the 25-metre backstroke and also took home a bronze medal in the 25-metre freestyle. Fellow aquatics athlete from Kilkenny Diarmuid O’Flynn meanwhile came 5th in the 50-metre backstroke and the 50-metre freestyle, and took 7th place in the 4x25-metre freestyle.

In bocce, Conor Ryan won a bronze medal in the singles event and took 5th place in the doubles event and 4th place in the team event. Swimmer Catriona Kearney of Bagenalstown came 7th in the 4x25-metre freestyle, 4th in the 50-metre freestyle and 4th in the 50-metre backstroke.

They were among the 126 Special Olympics athletes who competed for Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The team flew home yesterday (Tuesday).
