Gael scoil Osrai, Kilkenny city had a number of special guests launching the “Rith Beo” fun run which takes place May 26 in the city. Micheal O’Muircheartaigh the well-known broadcaster was on hand to launch the event.
The octogenarian is a passionate advocate of the Irish language and is a living example of what exercise can do for the body and soul. He spoke to the “daltai” for an hour on various topics and fielded questions from the floor afterwards.
Also on hand was Brendan Aherne from Tax Back one of the sponsors of the event. Jackie Tyrell Kilkenny hurler represented Glanbia another of the sponsors of the event. Jackie was surrounded by children looking to have his autograph after the launch
The run which will feature a 5km and a 10 km route is designed for all ages and ability. The event is being organised by the active school committee headed by one of the teachers Michelle Ni Bhuachalla and Margaret Greene one of the parents of the school. The active school committee was the first to receive the active school flag in county Kilkenny for their school. Muinteoir Michelle said that the run is being organised to raise funds for an AstroTurf pitch on the school grounds. “We hope the run will promote exercise and wellbeing in the community. Our aim is that this run will be a Gathering event for past present and future pupils of the Gaelscoil. We hope that it will be an annual event. We want people to run or walk the route but most of all to have fun .It is open to people of all levels and abilities,” she said.
