Radio personality, Edwina Grace of KCLR 96fm, will lead the second annual Susie Long Memorial Walk in Kilkenny’s Castle Park this year.
Edwina will honour members of her own family who died from cancer, and those who fought the illness, by taking part in the walk. She will also remember Susie Long, the 42-year-old mother of two, who bravely spoke about her personal struggle against bowel cancer as a public patient.
Join Edwina in marking the sixth anniversary of Susie Long’s death on Sunday, December 1, at noon.
“I met Susie on a number of occasions over the years. She was such a strong woman to open up like she did about her battle with cancer. It was a tough challenge but what she did was inspiring,” remarked Edwina.
“I’ve lost a lot of family members to cancer...I also had a bit of a scare myself this year. When you see how many people are dying from cancer, it hits home,” she added.
Edwina is getting behind the fundraising efforts that continue for a hospice for the people of Carlow-Kilkenny. Chairman of the Susie Long Hospice Fund (SLHF) Tommy Roche has urged the public -- young and old -- to get behind the event.
“The people of Carlow-Kilkenny have already donated a massive 642,000 euro towards a hospice. We are still working towards our goal of achieving a palliative care unit here in Kilkenny and we will not stop until we get there.
“Last year’s walk was a tremendous success and we’re thrilled to have Edwina Grace as our ambassador for this year’s event. Susie was a fun-loving person and there was nobody better to enjoy a day out with friends and family.
The Memorial Walk is an opportunity for people to meet up in the Castle Park and enjoy a leisurely Sunday stroll. You don’t have to be an athlete or super-fit to enjoy a few laps of the park. Wrap up warm, bring your buggies and your pets and enjoy yourselves,” he added.
Sponsorship cards for the walk are available from Rollercoaster Records on Kieran Street, Kilkenny, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Donations can be made on the day of the walk. Please raise whatever you can, Free t-shirt to everyone who contributes €10 or more.
