Local man Trevor Coady has been chosen to represent Kilkenny in this year’s Dublin City Marathon, having won the popular vote in the 2012 Spar Spartan Challenge.
Trevor, who is from the city, only took up running in January of this year. He was 19 stone, and decided he needed to make a serious lifestyle change.
Now, six months on, he is a lean 15.5 stone, and has developed a passion for exercise.
“I love it, I’m totally addicted to running,” he says.
“I’m feeling a lot fitter and more energetic too. My diet would have totally changed as well.”
Spar has recruited one representative from every county in the Republic of Ireland to form a 26 strong team of Spartans to prepare for and compete in the five events of which it is an official partner – the four 2012 Dublin Marathon Race Series events and the Dublin Marathon on October 29. The first of these events is the Irish Runner 5 mile in the Phoenix Park this Saturday, June 30.
Trevor’s training is going well – four days a week he can be found out on the ring road or Waterford Road. He has also been given a six-month free gym membership, courtesy of the Ormonde Hotel’s leisure and fitness centre.
He is also being guided in his preparation by fitness guru Karl Henry (of Operation Transformation) and nutrition expert Paula Mee, who are both spearheading the campaign.
Each Spartan receives a fitness programme from Karl Henry, a tailored nutrition programme from Paula Mee as well as full running equipment.
So far, says Trevor, the support he has received from his friends and family has been hugely important in his progress. In his preparation for the marathon, he is also raising money for the Irish Hospice Foundation, with his own mycharity.ie webpage.
Those who wish to follow Trevor’s progress and blog updates can do so via the website www.spartanchallenge.ie or by visiting Spar’s Facebook page. The Spartan Challenge website also includes motivational, fitness and nutrition videos from the expert panel and will be updated weekly with new content so that anyone can follow the programme.
The Spartan judged to have most fully embraced all aspects of the challenge will win a trip for two to New York to spectate at the New York City marathon on November 4.
Suzanne Weldon, marketing director of BWG Foods, welcomed the Kilkenny selection.
“On behalf of everyone at Spar I’d like to congratulate Trevor on being selected to represent Kilkenny on the Spar Spartan challenge team and wish all the team good luck in the 5 mile race this weekend,” she said.
“The Spar Spartan challenge really is the ultimate for fans of leisure walking, jogging or running. Completing a marathon is a massive goal and ambition for many people and through the SPARTAN challenge we aim to make that goal a reality for people from all around the country.”
