Diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, is a major public health issue and is a condition that is on the rise in Ireland. In order to help address this, community dietitians with the HSE South are delivering what is known as the “XPERT” Programme. This award-winning group programme aims to inform people about their diabetes and enable them to better look after themselves and their condition. The programme was first developed in the UK and is part of an initiative that is now running all over Ireland. Community dietitians nationwide are working with local GPs to help people understand how best to manage the condition and reduce the long-term health risks it can bring.

Anyone who would like to participate in this six-week education programme can contact Susan Broderick at the Health Promotion Office at 056 7761400. The programme is free of charge to anyone with type 2 diabetes. It runs on Fridays, beginning on October 12 and finishing on November 16, and will take place in the boardroom of the HSE administrative building at Lacken, Dublin Road, Kilkenny.
