Low turnout for Childrens Referendum

IT was clear from Saturday evening that voters in the city and county were not coming out in numbers to vote.

At the Presentation School polling station on Parnell Street there was a slow trickle of people in during the morning with many of the voters members of the adjoining convent. Meanwhile at the CBS polling station on Stephen Street, a traditionally strong voting area turnout was reported as being ‘low’.

At the count centre at the Ormonde Hotel on Sunday morning there was almost no interest from the public with no one wandering in apart from one young family and a few local politicans. Counters quickly and efficiently went through the voting papers and a handful of county councillors carried out a rough tally which indicated from early morning that the referendum would be carried by 60% to 40%. The count was completed and the results were announced at 12.30pm.

The total electorate for the constituency was 103,243. The total poll was 35,120 (34%). There were 163 spoiled voted with the total valid poll coming in at 34,957. There were 20,687 yes votes and 14,270 no votes.
