Have to admire farmers

The year is flying by even allowing for the atrocious weather that we have experienced in 2012.It has been rumoured that the end of this year will be the coldest in years with temperatures as low as minus 20 .Lets hope if this happens that we can keep the country running as opposed to a few years ago when snow and ice almost closed the country down.

We should be in touch with our friends from Sweden and Norway to see how they can continue to operate for months on end and experiencing much more severe weather than we do .If the severe weather does arrive it will be very serious for many farmers who were unable to save sufficient fodder this summer. Farmers if you find yourself in difficulty remember there are many organisations out there who can help ie Teagasc & IFA and you need not necessarily be a member to get some good advice and help.Last Thursday’s sale was a bit bigger than expected though the increase in numbers did not affect the trade with perhaps a few more customers especially for quality lots. The plain types are still the most difficult to get away as they take longer to finish and as everyone knows meal is very expensive. I have to admire farmers who year on year feed cattle having no idea what they will get when their animals are ready for the factory.I have often suggested that farmers and factories should get together so at least the producer knows what returns he will receive in about six months time. The present system is very unpredictable and is similar to gambling not knowing whether you are a winner or loser. Farmers feeding cattle with so much money tied up should have a rough idea of what the future markets hold. Our weanling sale was somewhat bigger than the previous week Heavy types were a good sharp trade and it was quality lots that sold best of all.Heifers also sold well with many farmer customers for replacement and feeding types.

The sheep trade has been very tough over the past few weeks which has not been helpful for all involved in this sector of agriculture. This Mondays sale was very small with trade a little bit better with an increase of €2 to €4 per head. A good selection of cull ewes meet a lively trade. Next Monday in conjunction with our sheep sale we will hold a Dairy Sale of over 80 head comprising of Fr Maiden Heifers,In Calf Friesian Cows& Heifers and Freshly Calved Friesian Heifers and Cows this sale will start at 1.30 pm sharp.Until next week good buying, good selling and good luck
