TWO parishioners of St Mary’s Cathedral managed to thwart a theft during morning Mass in the cathedral yesterday (Tuesday).

Joe Malone and Philip Meagher were two members of the 50-strong congregation, when they spotted two other men entering the building – one taking up a position at the back and the other going forward to the front pews. When the time came for Holy Communion, one of the men got up to receive the sacraments from Msgr Kennedy, while the other quietly took purses from two women’s handbags, and made for the exit.

He was intercepted and confronted by Mr Malone and Mr Meagher, who managed to relieve him of the stolen property. At that point, he and his friend ran away.

Gardai were later notified of the incident.

“When I saw them come in, I knew they were up to no good and something was going to happen,” said Mr Malone, who is also a member of Kilkenny Borough Council.

“I didn’t recognise one, but the other is a well-known drug addict and thief. People are going to Mass and they need to be vigilant for this sort of thing, especially at Communion when they might leave down their belongings.”
