The Carlow company behind popular craft beer brand O’ Hara’s is to open a new pub in Kilkenny City – positive news for the on-trade and the city, which has seen a number of pubs close in recent times.

The family-owned Carlow Brewing Company will establish the pub in the premises of the former ‘Widow’s’ pub, and not, as had been previously mooted, in the former Anaconda/ Nixon-on-Watergate. The company has also said that there will not be a micro-brewery operating on the premises – at least not for the moment.

However, there is a growing expectation that the city will nevertheless maintain its proud brewing tradition, with suggestions that Diageo will invest in a visitor centre on the St Francis Abbey site. Many of those involved in the decision to buy the historic site have expressed a desire for Ireland’s oldest brewery to keep some form of micro-brewing activity.

Meanwhile, the Carlow Brewing Company, which was founded in 1996, has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with a general upsurge in public interest in craft beers. The company has a number of different products, on sale in over 20 countries worldwide.
