A local family is showing the rest of us how its done for The Gathering 2013, expecting to welcome hundreds of their relatives from all over the world this week.

The Harper family, originating from Coon, Kilkenny is hosting a family reunion as part of the Gathering initiative. This is the fourth reunion to be held by the descendants of Sgt Robert Harper, with previous reunions taking place in 1990, 1999 and 2006.

Over 250 family members will attend the weekend-long reunion from April 4–7, with many travelling from abroad. Harpers will be flying home from as far as Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Hawaii, Canada, Austrailia and across Europe to reunite for this wonderful celebration.

Many exciting stories have emanated from this event. Some relatives in Canada discovered they had family in the same town as a result of contact they made through the reunion. Many other members didn’t realise they had such a big Irish family and are delighted with the unexpected discovery.

The reunion will take place in Kilkenny College and will include a talent show, art exhibition and seminars for all the family to participate in and enjoy. The family say they are delighted to be able to support The Gathering initiative this year, by inviting their relatives back home to Kilkenny.
