TWO local Gardai were rushed to hospital following a vicious attack in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The members, a male and a female who are stationed at Kilkenny Garda Station had responded to a public order incident at John’s Green at 1.30am.

Gardai were at the scene of an altercation between two groups of people when the violent outburst occurred. As Gardai attempted to bring the situation under control two members of the Gardai were assaulted. The male Garda was pushed to the ground and then kicked in the head and his female colleague was kicked in the chest area. Both Gardai were brought to St Luke’s Hospital where they were treated for their injuries.

A number of arrests were made in relation to the public order incident but Gardai are appealing for information in relation to the assaults.

Superintendent Michael Nevin said that Gardai are following a definite line of enquiry and that arrests are imminent in relation to the incident. “Two members required hospital assessment but fortunately they have no long-lasting injuries. It is very concerning that Gardai could be subjected to such a degree of violence and it is a very unwelcome development in the city,” he said.
