Top price of over E1,1800 for Andy

Last Monday in Kilkenny Mart we held our usual Dairy Sale which included the entire herd for Andy Casey. The quality herd attracted many bidders with a top €1,810 with yearling Friesian maidens selling to a high of €1,000. There are still customers for quality dairy stock even allowing for over quota problems. The calf trade remains just as strong with continental bull calves selling to a high of €510. The calves in general are up by €80 to €140 per head on last years returns and for farmers buying these animals prices for beef animals would need to stay strong to even to give a small profit .Due to lMonday being a Bank Holiday we held our sheep, calf and dairy sale on Tuesday (yesterday) which meant a reduction in sheep numbers been offered. This Wednesday (today) the Kilkenny Agricultural Society holds its Premier Bull sale with almost 200 on offer next week I will give a report on this sale.

Thursday’s cattle sale attracted a bigger number with over 1,000 head on offer trade was helped by the appearance of new buyers buying cattle for grass that has started to appear in abundance. With light stores selling as high as €3.79 per kilo a slip in prices could cause a lot of pain to present purchases .Let us hope that is a long way off .Beef cattle are in short supply and farmers who have animals of this type to sell are in a strong position.

This year so far has been very positive for all farming activity which reflects the strong interest in the sector. If there are no food scares in the coming months and years agriculture could well be a major plus for the Irish economy. Here’s hoping you all had a good weekend and all mothers were spoilt last Sunday. Until next week good buying, good selling and good luck.
