THE “hole in the wall gang” struck in Castlecomer, North Kilkenny early yesterday morning. And nobody in the town centre heard the huge mechanical digger used in the daring raid, knock a portion of the post office wall, taking a first storey and ground floor window out, leaving a gaping hole.

The raiders who had earlier stolen the large machine 20 miles away in Carlow town got away with a small safe from the unoccupied premises. It was empty. They cut the phone lines and alarm before they struck and knew where the safe was positioned, under the ground floor window they removed.

Nobody heard the huge chunk of masonry being taken out and it was a motorist going to work at around 6.30am that raised the alarm. Gardai are examining CCTV footage from Carlow town and are asking the public to help with their enquiries. They want to talk to anyone who saw anything suspicious between 4 and 6.30am yesterday in the centre of Castlecomer or anything suspicious from the Hackettstown Road area of Carlow town and as far as Castlecomer in the hours preceding the robbery. The confidential telephone number is 056-4441222.
