Secondary students get snap happy

TRANSITION year students from nine schools across the city and county will take part in a photographic competition early next month.

TRANSITION year students from nine schools across the city and county will take part in a photographic competition early next month.

The presentation of prizes and awards will be held in Loughboy Community Centre on March 8 at 7.30pm. Mayor David Fitzgerald will be attending on the night, along with the Irish Photographic Federation President, Kilkenny man, Dr John Cuddihy and Mr Tadhg Leonard, Nikon Sales Manager.

The participating schools are Colaiste Eamann Ris, Callan; St Brigid’s College, Callan; Duiske College, Graignamanagh; Colaiste Pobail Osrai, Ormonde Road; Loreto Secondary School, Granges Road; Christian Brothers Secondary School, James Street; Presentation Secondary School, Loughboy; Grennan College, Ladywell Street, Thomastown and Kilkenny College, Castlecomer Road.

The students enter one image of their choice. On the night of the presentation of prizes and certificates of achievements the four best images from each school will be critiqued by Maria Dunphy of Maria of Kilkenny, Photography Studio, High Street and Seamus Costelloe.

Prizes include a Nikon camers and a camera tripod. In addition the overall winners will each win a prize for their classmates of two presentations, one in Photoshop and the other in composition and lighting given by Hugo Reidy of the Kilkenny Photographic Society. Students with the best image from each school will be awarded a certificate of achievement. An exhibition of the students’ pictures can be seen for a week in the windows of The Book Centre, High Street. A raffle will also take place on the night and all are welcome to attend.
