GARDAI are appealing to the public for assistance following a violent attack on an elderly woman in broad daylight on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday.

The 86-year-old remains in a ‘serious but stable condition’ at St Luke’s Hospital and a man is being detained at Kilkenny Garda Station following the robbery.

The pensioner was walking a short distance to her home when she was assaulted by a male and robbed of a quantity of cash at College View between 11am and 11.30am. During the assault the woman ended up on the ground. Gardai are investigating whether she fell during the robbery or was forced down on the ground by her assailant. She was initially treated by paramedics at her home. A short time later the victim was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital by ambulance where she is receiving

medical attention.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the College View, WalkinStreet, Friary Street and High Street areas of the city between 10am and 11.30am on Tuesday morning to contact us,” a garda spokesman said.

A male, in his late thirties was arrested following the mugging and is currently in custody where he is being quizzed by senior detectives over his suspected involvement in the incident. Gardai are are appealing to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious to contact them on (056) 777 5000.
