A new gas-fired power plant is to be built in the IDA Business and Technology Park and Sion Road, Purcellsinch, following planning approval last week.
The power plant will consist of a number of tall buildings, large tanks and equipment. The development consists of the construction of a 100MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine Station, including a gas turbine with a 26m exhaust stack and 15m air vent stack.
Natural gas will be the primary fuel source. There is a risk of groundwater contamination during the plant’s construction and operation, but measures have been taken to minimise this potential.
A new 71.5 linear metre site-access road and new junction onto the IDA Business and Technology Park access road will be built also. Refurbishment of an existing pumphouse and river abstraction chamber will take place.
Electricity will be exported from the plant to a Kilkenny 110kV sub-station, and then on to the national grid.
