The organisers of the Irish Conker championships, held every year in Kilkenny, are taking a year off. The annual event in Freshford village will not go ahead during the October bank holiday weekend. Organisers are hopeful that it will be held again in 2014.

According to one of the chief organisers, Aileen Dooley, it’s time to; “press the pause button.”

In our gap year, we hope to travel the world, spread the word about the game and devise and elaborate network of conker players, so that the 2014 Irish Conker Championship is the biggest and best event ever,” she said.
