The Catholic Bishop of Ossory, Seamus Freeman has written to clergy in the diocese informing them that he had a mild stroke.

The 69-year-old told the priests that he had been treated for the stroke and was making a full recovery. He stressed that it was only a minor matter but that he would be taking another three weeks off from his ministry to ensure he recovers fully from what is in effect, a serious health warning for the Callan man.

He has another six years as bishop of the diocese and has placed the restoration of St Mary’s Cathedral in the centre of the city as one of his main aims.
