The Fianna Fail selection convention for Kilkenny City East has been adjourned amid scenes of turmoil at the Newpark Hotel tonight.

Party members had gathered at 8pm to select candidates for next year’s local elections. But the meeting descended into heated exchanges between the attendees, with confusion and disagreement over selection processes.

The meeting was suspended as the top table withdrew. It will be reconvened in three weeks’ time.

Several names were expected to be put forward at tonight’s meeting, including Andrew McGuinness, Joe Reidy, Sean Treacy and Peter Cleere.

The first selection convention for the Party, for Kilkenny City West, was held last night in the Newpark Hotel. It saw the nomination of current councillors John Coonan and Matt Doran, as well as newcomer Patrick McKee. Current borough councillor Joe Malone lost out on his Party’s selection.
