DEPUTY John McGuinness has been rewarded for his support of new Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin in the recent leadership contest by being named as party spokesman for small to medium enterprises.

DEPUTY John McGuinness has been rewarded for his support of new Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin in the recent leadership contest by being named as party spokesman for small to medium enterprises.

Deputy McGuinness was controversially sacked by Taoiseach Brian Cowen in late 2009 as Minister for Trade after he publicly criticised Tanaiste Mary Coughlan, the senior minister at the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment.

The elevation to party spokesman provides Deputy McGuinness with a major boostgoing into the general election where he is in a Titanic struggle with fellow Fianna Fail TD in Kilkenny, Bobby Aylward, to hold his seat.

Last week's opinion poll in the Kilkenny People revealed they are running neck and neck and only one of them is assured a seat with party support in the five seat constituency of Carlow-Kilkenny at around 24%.
