WORK on five roadways across Kilkenny which have long been in need of upgrading and attention is to progress to planning shortly.

The works are among dozens of projects which are to proceed to planning stage over the coming months and outlined by the Government over the weekend. The works to proceed to planning in Kilkenny include the N77 at Hennebry’s Cross, the N24 Tower Road, the N76 Callan Road realignment project at Tennypark, the N78 Damerstown Improvement Scheme and the Ballynaslee realignment, also on the N77.

The news of the upgrades to the roads has been welcomed by Fine gael TD John Paul Phelan.

“Lots of these works have been long-fingered for far too long and I’m glad that they have been included in the list which is to go to planning this year. The works were outlined by Transport Minister, Leo Varadkar on Sunday.

“This works programme will be much reduced compared to years past, with the majority of capital spending relating to maintenance and money which are already contractually committed for the close out of projects across the country. However, €100 million worth of funding will be provided for the funding of new, small scale, road safety and upgrading projects,” Deputy Phelan said.

“I’m delighted that five projects in Kilkenny are included in over 30 additional minor schemes which will be brought through the planning process in 2012 and will be built whenever funding permits.”
