Two men were allegedly assaulted in separate incidents over the festive season and gardai are appealing to the public for assistance.

In the early hours of Thursday morning gardai came across a fight on West Street in Callan. One man was on the ground and two other males were kicking and punching him.

The victim, a 30-year-old male, claimed that he had been headbutted but refused medical assistance when offered it by gardai. One man was arrested at the scene and one absconded.

The arrested male was taken to Kilkenny Garda Station where he was questioned and released without charge. A file on the matter is being prepared for the DPP.

In a separate and unrelated incident in the early hours of Thursday morning, gardai encountered a male lying on the ground in the city centre with cuts to his head and face. He was rushed by ambulance to St Luke’s Hospital where he received stitches to his face.

The man claimed that he was the victim of an unprovoked assault. Gardai are gathering CCTV and are appealing to anyone with information to contact them on (056) 772 5000.
