Kilkenny hairstylist and businessman Kieran O’Gorman is celebrating after winning one of the biggest categories at the Irish Hairdressing Federation (IHF) Irish Hairdressing Championships – the Oscars of the industry.

The Kilkenny man, who is proprietor of Kieran O’Gorman Hair, Beauty & Day Spa on the Butterslip, won the Senior Ladies Full Fashion Award, one of the most prestigious in the entire competition, at a highly competitive tournament and awards ceremony at Dublin’s Citywest Conference Centre.

Established in 1974, the Irish Hairdressing Championships showcase and award the most talented and creative stylists in the country. To win the Senior Ladies Full Fashion category, Kieran had to produce an overall look suitable for the cover of a fashion magazine. He was given five minutes to finish a prepared look, which was then judged by a panel of eight judges. He was awarded a silver perpetual trophy at the awards ceremony that proceeded the competition.

Speaking after the ceremony, Kieran said, “Wining a competition like the IHF is fantastic for me and the salon. As a stylist it’s very important to push the boundaries and challenge yourself creatively. I’m very proud of having my business in Kilkenny and, from this base, having the opportunity to travel worldwide to showcase, mentor and teach and, on nights like tonight, take awards back to Kilkenny”.

From Newtown Kells, Kieran became an apprentice hairdresser at just sixteen years of age in one of the country’s largest salons. He completed the traditional four-year training course in just twelve months and was a trained stylist at 17. At just 21 years of age, he opened his own salon on the Butterslip, which one of the first salons in Ireland to achieve five-star status. In 2006, Kieran extended his premises and added a beauty offering to become Kieran O’Gorman Hair Beauty and Day Spa, a one-stop-shop for hair and beauty needs. Clients travel from Dublin, the southeast and south of the country to the salon which is 21 years in business this year and currently employs 22. Kieran O’Gorman Hair, Beauty & Day Spa is one of only 16 salons in the country invited to become a member of the prestigious Intercoiffure Mondial

In addition to his salon work, Kieran has become one of the foremost innovators in his industry through his extensive seminars and master classes that take him around the world on behalf of global style brands such as Matrix, owned by L’Oreal. Kieran is Artistic Director for Matrix Ireland and UK and the only Irish member of the British Fellowship of Hairdressing. His photographic work has included several shoots for Hairdressers Journal Hair, Hair Flair and Irish Hairdressers Journal.
