GARDAI are appealing to the public for information following the seizure of drugs, estimated to be worth 22,000 euro from the side of a road on the outskirts of Kilmanagh.

A local person alerted gardai after he discovered a sportsbag crammed full of drugs on the side of the road on New Year's Day. The bag was discovered at approximately 10am on the roadside, around two miles outside the village on the Kilkenny to Kilmanagh road. Gardai were immediately contacted and carried out a search of the area.

The drugs, believed to be cannabis in a variety of forms and illegally obtained anti-depressants were seized and have been sent to Garda Headquarters in Dublin for forensic analysis. "We are looking for information from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to contact us immediately. Someone may have seen someone leaving a bag by the side of the road or discarding something from a car window," a garda spokesman said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the gardai in Kilkenny on 056 772 22 22.

Meanwhile gardai made a number of drug seizures in the city over the Christmas period. For more see page two.
