AN opportunity to explore the banks of the River Barrow in the shadow of Brandon Hill and the Blackstairs mountains by bike has been provided by an enterprising guesthouse and restaurant owner . The Waterside located on The Quay in Graignamanagh has started a new venture in soft adventure for families and leisure visitors, providing bike hire to guests of Waterside and other visitors to the area. Visitors will be able to explore the Barrow towpath and to experience safe off road cycling in a beautiful setting. There will also be the option of wheeling around some of the byways and quiet country roads in the area. This is an opportunity to not only see the sunny southeast of Ireland, but to get into it and really live.
Waterside Bike and Hike will operate 30 e mountain bikes for adults and children to start with. These will be well suited to country roads and the grassy towpath. There are also a number of electric bikes in the offering. These will allow cyclists to tackle hilly areas, and are also useful in evening up things when a group has a range of abilities but all want to cycle together.
This new venture is a brave and confident one in the current economic climate, but Brian Roberts of The Waterside is convinced that the Barrow Valley, Brandon Hill and Blackstairs countryside that surrounds Graignamanagh is absolutely ideal for leisure cycling. And the project has received funding and enthusiastic support from Kilkenny Leader Partnership who have been to the forefront in promoting leisure trails in the Kilkenny area. The Barrow Towpath is a fantastic amenity for walking and cycling and compares favourably with any greenway or cycle trail on the island of Ireland.Waterside Bike and Hike has a custom built 20 bike trailer allowing us to deliver bikes for group bookings to anywhere in the Barrow Valley. Therefore we can facilitate one way trips and a variety of locations.
Waterside Bike & Hike are also able to offer guided bike tours to groups who want to explore and learn about the wildlife and ecology of the area, the history of the Barrow navigation and some of the rich heritage of counties Carlow and Kilkenny. Brian Roberts, proprietor of Waterside Bike & Hike, has a degree in Natural Sciences and a diploma in Ecology, and is a lifelong outdoors enthusiast. Group tours can benefit from his knowledge of the area and insight into life along the Barrow, while at the same time participating in an enjoyable and active day out.
